Hillcrest continued… The neighborhood of Hillcrest has an eclectic mix of people, homes, restaurants, bars, and shopping that embraces a culturally diverse lifestyle. The neighborhood’s east end includes a towering rainbow pride flag just off Hillcrest’s main thoroughfare of University Avenue, at the corner of Normal Street. A block away, down Harvey Milk Street, is where most of the San Diego LGBT Community Center resides.
Hillcrest is part of the city of San Diego’s Uptown Community Plan, which consists of the neighborhoods of Mission Hills, Hillcrest, Bankers Hill, Park West, and University Heights. The neighborhood is home to the largest farmers markets in San Diego, featuring local produce, arts and crafts, a wide range of hot and cold cuisine, and more. Hillcrest “CityFest” is an annual street festival which features food, live entertainment, a beer garden and street vendors. ‘San Diego Pride’ is a celebration that takes place every year in July for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. Considered to be the largest civic event in the city of San Diego, the event includes a Pride Parade, a Hillcrest Block Party and a two-day festival in Balboa Park.
Located just south of Hillcrest, Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in the U.S. A hub for arts, and culture, recreation, and community gatherings, Balboa Park is home to 16 museums and performing arts venues, Spanish-Renaissance architecture, the San Diego Zoo, and 1,200 acres beautiful gardens. Portions of the park, which border North Park, offer tennis courts, shuffleboard, a bicycle track, golf course and other forms of recreation. Morley Field, on the northeast corner of Balboa Park, provides tennis courts, basketball courts, a children’s play area, a football field, shuffleboard, a soccer field and more.
University Heights continued… The population and facilities of University Heights grew exponentially in 1915 due to the Panama–California Exposition held in Balboa Park. An ostrich farm and public garden were constructed near what is now the corner of Adams Avenue and Park Boulevard. Later, a neighborhood of homes called Mission Cliff Gardens was built at the site. The neighborhood still retains the original garden boundary wall of rounded stones. Shirley Ann Place between Madison Ave. and Monroe Ave. is a designated historic district of 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival bungalows.
The Electric street sign for University Heights was designed by a local artist and constructed by Young Electric Sign Compay (YESCO). The design incorporated historical elements from the past and present within the community. Today, the sign serves as a local landmark and identity marker for the University Heights community. The popular Trolley Barn Park, located on the North side of Adams Avenue in University Heights, is the site of an old streetcar barn. The park includes a children’s playground and hosts free summer concerts every Friday night.
